dc.description.abstract	In this brief introductory chapter, I want to sketch some key concepts in welfare and talk about how I will use them. The central task of the chapter therefore is to frontload many of the ideas and concepts that are threaded throughout this book at the outset so that they make sense where they appear. It is not my intention to give a complete overview of welfare and welfare states as this has been done extensively elsewhere. However certain concepts are important enough to warrant an overview meaning that this chapter functions somewhat as of a detailed glossary of key terms.	en
